Handwoven Ikperendiọma Akwete from Eastern Nigeria. Upcycled Krobo beads from Ghana. Aso-Oke from Western Nigeria. Mbili means rising in Igbo. This Kaftan was inspired by the uneven heights of city skylines, the Aso-oke details rise from the hem like a collection of towers, bringing colour, structure and movement to the Aso-oke base.

At its heart is Ikperendiọma, an Akwete pattern meaning “Good People’s Knees.” Its story is a reminder that Akwete has never been a static tradition. It has continued to absorb the changing histories, beliefs and experiences of its people and weave them into cloth.

For this piece, Akwete meets Aso-oke, with upcylced Krobo glass Ghana bead completing the look, bringing together different expressions of West African craftsmanship in one garment.

Traditions, reimagined. Histories, still rising.
