Sankofa is an Akan concept from Ghana, represented by a bird whose head turns backwards while its body faces forward. The word is commonly understood as “go back and fetch it.” It carries the idea that looking back, retrieving knowledge and learning from the past can help us move forward.
The Sankofa bird on these pants carries that idea. On the pocket, Handmade Krobo glass beads add another layer to the story. These upcycled beads are made in Ghana by transforming discarded or scrap glass into colourful beads, the process gives something that might have been left behind another life as something beautiful and valuable.
Together, they speak to a simple idea: What is behind us can still hold value.
We can look back, retrieve what matters, transform it and carry it with us into what comes next.
